Mark Schafer

Mark Schafer (GRS’98) of Roxbury, Mass., writes, “We’re all doing well here in historic Roxbury. My daughter is finishing sixth grade and I’ve been super busy myself. My translation of Jewish Mexican poet Gloria Gervitz’s monumental life’s work, Migrations: Poem, 1976–2020 (2021), was published by the New York Review of Books, and in March I self-published my children’s book, Born To Be Happy (2022), a fable about my daughter’s early life in Haiti. As an artist and a community arts activist, I was lead organizer for a photo of 77 of the elders of our neighborhood of Highland Park, titled A Great Day in Roxbury’s Highland Park (yes, the reference is intentional), and cocreator of a public art light installation for the neighborhood that incorporated a coding workshop for local teens [in fall of 2021].” Email Mark at BelBagay@gmail.com.
