Judy (Moore) von Sicard
Judy (Moore) von Sicard (CAS’44) of Birmingham, England, writes, “Eileen (Maguire) Hawkes’ entry in Class Notes summer 2020 has inspired me to send in my update. I am 97 going on 98. I came from Memorial College, St. John’s, Newfoundland, to complete my AB degree. After teaching a few years in my hometown, I went to the School of Religious Education at the Hartford Seminary Foundation, where I earned an MA in 1956. I was married in Egypt that year and went with my husband to Tanganyika. After Swahili language studies, I was put in charge of Home Craft School. In 1965, we were posted to Makumira Theological College, now part of Tumaini University [Makumira], where I was involved in the training of the wives of theological students. I cannot claim to have been to over 100 countries like Eileen, but I have lived in a number of countries for extended periods of time and learned to appreciate their languages and traditions. We left Tanzania in 1968 and spent two and a half years in Uppsala, Sweden, where I learned Swedish. In 1971, we were posted to the Selly Oak Colleges in Birmingham, England, where I retired after being employed by the education department of the city council to teach English to immigrant children. During this time, I produced a series of workbooks that have continued to be used by colleagues. I relate all this information to share my motto: carpe diem. Inspired by my varied experiences, I submitted articles to the magazine Chatelaine and wrote a children’s book titled Juma’s Goat and other Stories (Janus, 1992). My main opus, Beyond the Narrows: Cultural Reflections from My Missionary Life (Bold World Books, 2013), describes my experiences in different African and European countries.” Email Judy at s.v.sicard@gmail.com.
