James R. Whitley

James R. Whitley (SPH’94) of Waterbury, Conn., published the poetry collection Songs for Solo Voice (Red Mountain Press, 2021). “The collection is an extended music-inspired reflection on love, betrayal, loss, and resilience,” James writes. The book, his fourth published poetry collection, was awarded the 2020 Red Mountain Press Poetry Prize. His first collection, Immersion (Lotus Press, 2002), was the winner of the 2001 Naomi Long Madgett Poetry Prize, and his second, This Is the Red Door (Ironweed Press, 2009), won both the Ironweed Poetry Prize and the 2009 Massachusetts Book Award for Poetry. His third collection was The Goddess of Goodbye (Word Press, 2009). James, whose poetry has been published in more than 100 literary journals, is a dean at Post University.
