James M. Lawson, Jr.

James M. Lawson, Jr. (STH’60) of Los Angeles, Calif., was honored last fall by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, which proclaimed September 22, 2020, as Rev. James M. Lawson, Jr. Day. The proclamation was made in recognition of his contributions to nonviolent resistance during the civil rights and social justice movements as well as present-day events, and in recognition of his 92nd birthday. “Throughout the civil rights movement, ministers like Reverend Lawson were actively involved in training countless men and women on nonviolent resistance to achieve social justice,” according to the motion. “His commitment to the fight for civil rights for African Americans is well documented throughout this nation’s recent history. From a young age, Reverend Lawson sought to improve the lives and conditions of African Americans in his community.”
