Fatima Shaik
Fatima Shaik (COM’74) of New York, N.Y., was honored with the 22nd annual Louisiana Writer Award by the Louisiana Center for the Book in the State Library of Louisiana last fall. The award recognizes extraordinary contributions to the state’s literary heritage exemplified by the artist’s body of work. Fatima’s books include Economy Hall: The Hidden History of a Free Black Brotherhood (Historic New Orleans Collection, 2021), about a largely forgotten aspect of Louisiana history. She also has two short story collections: The Mayor of New Orleans: Just Talking Jazz (Creative Arts Book Co., 1988) and What Went Missing and What Got Found (Xavier Review Press, 2015). The Jazz of Our Street (Dial Books, 1998) and On Mardi Gras Day (Dial Books, 1998) are her two picture books for children, and she has written a young adult novel called Melitte (Puffin Books, 1997).
