Douglas Brown
Douglas Brown (CGS’83, Pardee’85, LAW’88) of Sherborn, Mass., was elected a member of the American Antiquarian Society. Douglas, a healthcare executive at UMass Memorial Health in Worcester, writes, “My third-grade teacher pulled me and my desk into the hallway and told me I would not amount to much. My sixth-grade English teacher told me not to worry about the poor grade on my essay because ‘not every kid can grow up to be a good writer.’ (I have written several opinion pieces in major periodicals since.) And then there was eighth grade. Direct from my report card: ‘Doug’s good cheer is sometimes overshadowed by his lack of attention and disturbing attitude.’ What turned things around for me? It was largely the experience I received at the College of General Studies (then called the College of Basic Studies).... For all of these reasons, this particular honor of being elected into the same society whose membership includes 14 presidents of the United States (including Adams, Jefferson, and Teddy Roosevelt), feels pretty special to me.”
