David I. Owen

David I. Owen (CAS’62) of Brookline, Mass., was a classical civilization and biblical studies major at BU. He earned a master’s degree in 1963 and a PhD in Mediterranean studies in 1969 at Brandeis University. (He was a Fulbright Scholar at Ankara University, Turkey, from 1966 to 1968.) David was the Bernard and Jane Schapiro Professor of Ancient Near Eastern and Judaic Studies (now emeritus) at Cornell University College of Arts and Sciences from 1974 until 2015, when he retired and moved to Brookline. For nearly 30 years, he participated in or directed archaeological excavations in Italy, Greece, Cyprus, Turkey, and Israel, and lectured on Cornell alumni programs throughout the Middle East. For the past 50 years, he has worked in the field of Assyriology, having published critical editions of Sumerian and Babylonian tablets in more than 150 books and articles.
