SDM’s Sarkis Wins AAE/Dentsply Award at Annual Meeting
SDM’s Ramzi Sarkis won an American Association of Endodontists award.
Ramzi Sarkis, an assistant professor of endodontics at the Goldman School of Dental Medicine, won the Dentsply Award from the American Association of Endodontists at its annual meeting in Philadelphia in late April.
His poster, Antibacterial Activity of Leachable Components from Aged Endodontic Materials, describes the antibacterial activity of three aged endodontic materials — the type of filling used during a root canal — using a bacterial survival test. The research is promising, Sarkis says, because antibacterial activity in older fillings could decrease the risk of infection during oral surgery. “Antibacterial activity of retrograde fillings is highly desirable,” Sarkis wrote in a research abstract that appears in the March 2007 issue of the Journal of Endodontics.
Sarkis noted the work of his collaborators, including Jeffrey Hutter, senior associate dean at SDM, Laisheng Chou, a professor and director of the Division of Oral Medicine, and Christopher Hughes, an associate professor and chair of the department of pediatric dentistry, thanking them for their mentorship and support.
