Sports Medicine in Demand
Matthew Pecci recently began a Thursday morning sports medicine clinic at Student Health Services for sports-related injuries.
Sports-related injuries are not just for professional and collegiate athletes — they are common among the general population as well. Matthew Pecci, an assistant professor in the School of Medicine department of family medicine and director of Primary Care Sports Medicine, recognized the need for a sports medicine clinic that is not just for athletes, so last month he began a Thursday morning clinic at Student Health Services for any student with a sports-related injury.
Pecci, who has been a BU Athletics Department team physician for six years, became a Student Health Services provider in September. “I devote a lot of time to varsity athletes anyway,” he says, “so this clinic is really focused on the general student body here.”
The clinic concentrates mainly on muscular and skeletal injuries stemming from physical activity and runs from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Thursday.
“Since I’ve been here, I’ve realized that a lot of the complaints that students have are sports medicine injuries,” Pecci says. “So by having the clinic, it gives students a set day where they know they can come in and be seen by someone who has an expertise in that area.” Students who need X-rays can have them done immediately at the Fitness and Recreation Center, according to Pecci.
