SED Student Combines Academic Excellence with Helping Others
SED Book Award recipient David Freeman (CAS’08, SED’08) is a Dean’s List scholar and an active volunteer.
For David Freeman (CAS’08, SED’08), hard work in class and as a volunteer is just part of a balanced life. Freeman was recognized as a College of Arts and Sciences Distinguished Student for his spring 2005 semester 4.0 grade point average and has been on the Dean’s List in both the School of Education and CAS every semester since his freshman year.
In his spare time, Freeman participates in SED’s Transitional Mentor program, a student-run organization that pairs upperclassmen with incoming freshmen to ease their transition into college. He also volunteers with the BU chapter of the Best Buddies Program, a national organization that facilitates friendships between students and adults with cognitive disabilities.
One of the 19 SED students chosen for an SED Fall 2006 Book Award, Freeman will receive $500 for textbooks, supplies, and software. The Book Awards Program gives the annual award on the basis of merit to SED juniors, seniors, and graduate students.
Freeman, who will be studying and interning abroad in Sydney, Australia, this spring, says that while he certainly works hard, he doesn’t forget the value of a bit of downtime. “I’ve always been into school, but not so much to the point that it prevents me from having a social life,” he says.
