The United States Association for Energy Economics (USAEE) announced that they will honor Cutler Cleveland, the director of the Center for Energy and Environmental Studies at Boston University, with the 2006 Adelman-Frankel Award. The award will be presented at their annual conference, held September 24 through 27, and recognizes an individual or organization for a unique or innovative contribution to the field of energy economics.

Cleveland was selected for this award “not only because of his many illuminating papers on energy,” said Mine Yucel, USAEE president, “but also because of his effort in putting together the Encyclopedia of Energy.”

Over his many years in the field, Cleveland, whose research focuses on the ecological-economic analysis of how energy is used to meet human needs, has published countless articles in numerous journals, such as Nature, Science, and The Energy Journal.   He is also the editor-in-chief of the Dictionary of Energy and the Encyclopedia of Energy.

Currently, Cleveland is working on an addition to this line of energy reference books to be called the Handbook of Energy, which will be a technical reference guide to all aspects of energy.  Cleveland is also a member of the team at the National Council for Science and the Environment developing the Earth Portal.  The Earth Portal will be a trusted source for information about the environment that is free to all users and whose content is not supported by commercial interests.

Dr. Cleveland holds a B.S. in Ecology and Systematics from Cornell University, a M.S. in Marine Science from Louisiana State University, and a Ph. D. in Geography from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is currently also a member of the American Statistical Association’s Committee on Energy Statistics, an advisory group to the Department of Energy.
