BU junior killed in accident in Peru
Meghan Sennott remembered as 'an adventurer'
Boston University junior Meghan Sennott, 20, was killed in a bus accident in Peru on Sunday, May 14. Sennott (CAS’07), a history and biology major from Minnesota, had spent last semester studying in Ecuador through a BU study-abroad program and was traveling with her boyfriend for the summer.
“She was an adventurer,” says Nicole Norman (CAS’07), Sennott’s roommate.
The accident took place early Sunday morning when the bus skidded off a highway and turned on its side, according to Associated Press reports. The bus was near Santa Lucia, a district in the southern Andes mountains, when the accident occurred; 12 other people were killed and approximately 40 injured. The cause of the accident has not yet been determined.
Sennott’s boyfriend, identified as Rich Geddie by the Daily Free Press, was also on the bus and reportedly is in critical condition.
Friends and family members are remembering Sennott as “beautiful, intelligent, hilarious, and free-spirited,” according to Mary Callahan, a junior at the University of Minnesota, who had been friends with Sennott since eighth grade.
“All she wanted in life was to see the world, and ironically, she died doing what she was so passionate about,” says Callahan. “She was in love with Boston and had wanted to go to school there her entire life, and I am so happy that she accomplished that goal, along with traveling the world and falling in love. Meghan was extraordinary.”
“We offer our condolences to her friends and family,” says University spokesman Colin Riley. “It’s a terrible tragedy.” The Office of the Dean of Students is available for any students seeking help or counseling.
Sennott’s sister Erynn, a student at St. Cloud State University in St. Cloud, Minn., posted a note on Sennott’s Facebook page saying that the family has gone to Lima, Peru, to bring her home. “If you could,” she wrote, “please send us your fondest memories of your time with Meghan.”
