Women’s Soccer This Weekend
The Boston University women’s soccer team looks to return to prominence in the 2005 season. The Terriers (1-1) will look to build off of their 2-1 win over UMass in last Sunday’s home opener. Winners of the 2003 America East regular season title, The Terriers compiled a 13-5-2 overall record in 2004 including a thrilling 1-0 victory over rival B.C.
Coached by the program’s matriarch and founder Nancy Feldman, B.U. returns 18 letter winners from last year’s team, including the Terrier’s top three scorers and a pair of all-conference performers. Leading the charge are senior forwards Meghann Cook and Melissa Schulman. Cook led the team with 28 points last season (9G, 10 A), and ranks seventh all-time at B.U. in both goals scored and points. Schulman tallied 20 points (8G, 4A), and is fourth all-time at B.U. with 25 career goals and fifth with 61 points. Meanwhile, America East Midfielder of the Year Brooke Bingham and America East Defender of the Year Brittany McDonald anchor a defensive unit which allowed just 18 goals in 20 games. Add in the veteran goalkeeping duo of Stephanie Dreyer and Christina Reuter, and the Terriers have a legitimate shot to repeat their fine season of 2003, which led them into the NCAA Tournament.
“We have tremendous depth this season and our experience is very solid, a lot of players who were year in 2003,” said Feldman, who is 124-64-15 in her 10 years at B.U. “We have a chance to be very special this season and I am excited about going through the year with this group.”
The Terriers continue their three-game homestand when they host Central Connecticut State in the BU Tournament Friday (Sept. 2). Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m., at Nickerson Field and the contest will be preceded by a match between Hofstra and Maine. The Terriers will continue play in the tournament on Sunday, Sept. 4, against Hofstra, beginning at noon.
