Middlesex County DA Martha Coakley to teach at LAW
Middlesex County District Attorney Martha Coakley will teach at LAW next semester.
Martha Coakley (LAW’79), the Middlesex County district attorney, has joined the BU School of Law faculty.
Coakley is first woman in Massachusetts to be elected district attorney. The part-time adjunct professor will teach a Trial Advocacy course this spring.
Since she began working in the D.A.’s office in 1986, Coakley has investigated and prosecuted some of the most high-profile cases in the state’s history, including the Commonwealth v. Louise Woodward, the “shaken-baby” trial that attracted worldwide press coverage in 1997, the case of Michael McDermott, who shot and killed seven work colleagues in 2000, and the Commonwealth v. Thomas Junta, the 2002 “hockey dad” case that helped bring the “rink rage” phenomenon into the national consciousness.
Coakley, who has been in office since 1998, delivered LAW’s Max M. Shapiro Lecture in Trial Advocacy last February. She is a candidate for Massachusetts attorney general.
Also recently appointed to the LAW faculty were:
David Breen (LAW’90), clinical associate professor, is teaching several criminal trial practice courses this fall. This spring he will supervise students in LAW’s Criminal Prosecutor Program. After receiving his J.D. from BU in 1990 he earned his M.P.A. from Harvard University. He has served in the offices of the New York County District Attorney, the Massachusetts Attorney General, and the city of Boston’s corporation counsel.
Richard Brunell, part-time visiting professor, is teaching the courses Strict Products Liability and Regulated Industries this semester. He received his J.D. from Harvard University and has worked in the U.S. Department of Justice, the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office, and the law firm Foley Hoag. He has lectured at several colleges in New England, including BU.
Katharina de la Durantaye, visiting assistant professor, is teaching Comparative Law and European Intellectual Property Law this fall. She earned her Ph.D. at Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany. She has worked at the Berlin law firm Boehmert & Boehmert.
James Hackney, Jr., visiting professor, will teach a course on Corporations in the spring. He earned his J.D. at Yale University and has worked at the law firm Irell and Manella in Los Angeles. He has also taught at Northeastern University and Harvard University, and was an Olin Fellow at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles.
